City Bus Stop Competition Entry
City Bus Stop Competition EntryThis was my entry to a mini challenge posted in one of the local arch-viz forums called CGPinoy. The challenge was to re-imagine City Bus Stops. This isn’t a ground-breaking design to be honest, but it was only a day’s worth of work so I’m quite happy about the output. The structure is basically made out of welded C-sections. The perforations are clad with polycarbonate sheet panels, which are outlined with LED light strips.
Philippine Pavilion Interior, South Korea World Expo 2012
Philippine Pavilion Interior, South Korea World Expo 2012This is a render I did for the sole purpose of supposedly being in a magazine cover. I’m not sure if that idea is still pushing through, but here it is anyway.Utwentysix Design Studio got the chance to design the Philippine Pavilion for the upcoming exposition in South Korea. The overall theme of the expo has everything to do with marine life and their preservation, as well as island livelihood or something. It’s currently under construction as of April 25, 2012. The soft opening of the expo is somewhere around the first or second week of May 2012. The general area is Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, South Korea.
Zamboanga Residence
Zamboanga ResidenceThis is a night shot of the latest project I've done. Designed by an architect with ultra modern taste, this house boasts multiple volumes seemingly floating and free from the ground. This is perhaps the most rushed project I've ever done to date: seven images in 24 hours. Thankfully, the turned-over model was mostly finished (but messy), so the bulk of the work was clean-up, and manipulating the mood and environment. To be able to meet the deadline, render times were needed to be cut dramatically, so I decided to do most of the major environment work in post-production.
House in Cuenca, Batangas
House in Cuenca, BatangasThis was a straight screenshot from Revit using the shaded viewport. The final shot was finished after a few minutes of tinkering with Photoshop. This image was meant to convey the feeling of the place instead of a straight-shot accurate render.
Modern Interior
Modern InteriorI recently had a discussion with a colleague about some of the different types of approaches when it comes to presentation materials. Most of the people I know in the arch-viz community lusts for the photo-real look. With artists like Alex Roman, Bertrand Benoit, Peter Guthrie, Ronen Bekerman, and the other masters of photorealism, I can understand where the desire for the real-look comes from. For some reason, I’d rather have the raw, conceptual look of a not-so-photoreal image. My heroes would include studios like Vyonyx, MIR, Labtop, MOTYW, etc. Ever since I learned all this stuff I’ve always leaned on the conceptual dramatic look. I’m inclined to think that it’s because of preference, but perhaps the attitude stems from my lack of ability of make my images photoreal (hehe).Hence this image. I tried my best to make it look like a photo, from depth of field to morning sunshine dust. The sofa is a free model from Viz-people, the books are free models from somewhere that I re-mapped. The Cadmo lamp, coffee table, cabinets, dead plant, and the carpet I modeled myself.
Spa Facility in Lumion
Spa Facility in LumionThis sprawling spa facility arm of a clubhouse was one of the first things I worked on when I entered the prestigious architecture firm of Leandro V. Locsin, Partners early in 2014. This was also the first project where I got to use the graphics-centric rendering software called Lumion.
Cadmo by Artemide
Cadmo by ArtemideI’ve liked this designer floor lamp ever since I saw it on an design magazine. The body is all aluminum with a stainless steel base; it has 2 light sources, one incandescent and one halogen.Once again I had to pause for a while to think on how to model this lamp. It’s basically cylindrical in shape. At the bottom is a perfect circle, which is squeezed as it goes up, and then gracefully connects at the top, which is another perfect circle when viewed from above. At first I tried modelling a cylinder and molding it into the proper shape using deform modifiers, but soon I realized that wasn’t going to work.In the end, I used a rectangle spline, used the bend modifier to get the cylinder shape, and fiddled around with a 4x4 Free Form Deform modifier. And then I traced the side profile of the lamp using a JPG photo, made it into a geometry to subtract from the previous shape using ProBoolean. That process had the desired effect almost immediately. The only thing I did further was to apply some Shell modifiers for thickness and to model the base and the cord. Then made the materials, added IES lights, and rendered. It was a pretty good exercise!

Exhibit Space by U26
Exhibit Space by U26A client of utwentysix brought in a set of 1:20 scale models that were going to be set in very generous exhibition space. I’m not exactly sure where we fit into that agreement, but I was tasked to translate these scale models into a working 3D environment.Knowing the nature of this project, I kept in mind that there’s a definite possibility that we were going to 3D print these exhibits; therefore the 3D models had to be really efficiently clean.I took those scale models home and wrapped my head around how to model them. They are a mix of planar surfaces that’s being bent into different directions and angles. For this particular one, it was relatively straightforward after some thought: three vertical planes of varying horizontal and vertical angles were used for referencing the splines; then I applied a cross-section and surface modifier to create the basic shape. Then all those voids were subtracted. The tricky part was getting the measurements of the angles, heights and lengths correct.

Observation Tower Thesis Render
Observation Tower Thesis RenderThis is from a set of rushed images I made for a friend of a friend last January 2012. The angle is at a roof garden 150 meters above the ground, overlooking a bay area city. The proposed building is an observation tower. For once, concepts were already developed well enough to get the message across from the client to the visualizer. Those vertical elements are part of the truss for a huge arc, and collectively they’re supposed to represent a sun (hence the yellow-tinted structural glass).I meekly suggested that the glass railing should be higher to prevent unnecessary worries about safety, but the client didn’t want it. So I called this the Suicide Garden.

The Spoon by Deo Alam
The Spoon by Deo AlamFrom the concept sketches, I had to think for a bit on how to model this lounge chair.  The main mass tapers from the bottom to the top and from the front to the back; the interior is a reverse bevel with filleted corners; the upper (white) texture curves because it’s a tensioned textile. After a while I realized I could model it using section splines. I made the splines in Autocad, imported them to Max, used the Cross Section modifier plus the Surface modifier, and boom. The tapering I did with free form deform mod. The seams are just renderable splines with a noise modifier. Quite easy once you begin to figure it out.
Modern House in a storm
Modern House in a stormRemember Ondoy? This render came out as an accident. I was trying out some settings in the VrayEnvironmentFog, and one of the test renders came out Silent Hill-ish creepy with the fog an’ all that it looked like a thunderstorm. So I fired up good ole’ Photoshop and did some rain work!

Interior Rendering Competition
Interior Rendering CompetitionThis was my entry to a competition by an Autodesk Training Center. The competition was called 3D Master Interior Rendering Competition (hehe). I figured since I had free time this weekend that I’d try and join. Apparently you can win an Android Tablet (not bad) though I joined just for the sake of the exercise. This living room features warm antiarias wood flooring, a ceiling with geometric lines of diffusers, customized Eames Lounge Chair, full sofa set, a generous library, and a fantastic view of the country-side.
Observation Tower Thesis Render
Observation Tower Thesis RenderThis is a basic normal view exterior evening image of the observation tower I recently did. As usual, the design for the exterior lighting of the building came in last priority. I suggested a modern, Tron-inspired, cool temperature lighting lining the bezier curves of the tower. But the client surprisingly did not want the building to look modern; he wanted it to be as classic and monumental as possible, for it to “blend” to the surrounding environment.Well, how can you possibly blend a 300-meter tower to the 3-storey classic buildings beside it? I gave in and said “OK it’s your call”, hence the white general lighting (which ironically bounces and reflects off the aluminum cladding of the entire structure, making it look more modern.)

Design Console by U26
Design Console by U26This is a working design for a console. To model the design from the sketches was a challenge for me. It’s a mixture of rectangles with varying amounts of filleted vertices and skewed and scaled volumes. I tried several approaches and nothing seemed to work; lofting multiple cross sections resulted in slightly curved lines which were wrong; subtracting volumes from plan and elevation yielded undesirable edges. I even tried u-lofting NURBS curves, the result of which was very soft, flowing, and organic, but far from the design. In the end I acquiesced and just sculpted it from three polygon boxes; one for the head, the slender body, and the base, and then welded the three together. The end result is very close to the design, if a bit less ellipse-ish.

This 3D visualization is thus far my only contribution to the realization of this project, and the design credit goes to the three amazing design partners of the firm. Concept sketches can be found here.I can see glaring mistakes in the render, but who cares? hahaha at least there’s the two Asians wanting to get their picture with the building as the background.

Modern Interior
Modern InteriorThis is part 2 of my recent attempt at 3D photo-realism.In this image I utilized what is perhaps the most commonly used angle in interior imagery: the one point perspective. Browse any design magazine and most of the photos use this kind of composition. Only the luxury interiors can afford that angle due to the space required for the lens to work on. This is of course not a limitation in the 3D environment. The dining chairs are free models from Viz-people and the bar stool, spoon/fork/knives are licensed models from Evermotion. Everything else are personal models.
